Selling Real Estate without Paying Taxes : A Guide to Capital Gains Tax Alternatives
Published in Paperback by Dearborn Trade Publishing (June, 2003)
Author: Richard Williamson
Average review score:

A must read for property investors!
This book is just what the doctor ordered. I am not an accountant or big time property investor but I needed to find out how to deal with the taxes I faced on the sale of a small apartment building. This book covered the stuff my realtor talked to me about and went far beyond. I quickly found out that what I was planning on doing wasn't going to work out the way I (or my realtor) thought. However, this book gave me other ideas and choices I hadn't considered; some of which would work pretty well for my situation. I don't necessarily enjoy reading business or tax books, but this one was surprisingly easy to read and understand. I was able to get through the book in a few days and didn't get bored or mind boggled. Now I've got both my realtor and accountant reading it. This one is worth the time invested. Hat's off to the author.

Excellent Book!
This book is a "must read" for anybody who is considering buying or selling real estate in their lifetime. Many of the strategies listed in this book are very cutting edge. There are so many detailed tax advantages that are expressed in an easy to read format. This book is an excellent resource and I highly recommend it.

Show Me The Money
Published in Paperback by Adams Media Corporation (01 July, 2000)
Authors: Robert Sisson and Rob Sisson
Average review score:

Thorough and Informative!
This book is very comprehensive in presenting all the different ways one could get financing from traditional bank loans to more creative ones like seller refinancing (take a look at the table of contents). Two thirds of the book focuses covers the do's and don'ts of how to establish a good relationship with the bank, what the bank would like to see, and the proper way of working with the bank. It is very insightful and the author often throws in his own experiences/insights/observations as a bank officer as anecdotes for educating the reader. In the last third of the book, the author covers other ways to get financing for your business. This book is very easy to read, very concise and to the point as well as objective. This book is indispensible for those who want to become knowledgeable with all the different types of financing options.

Taking advantage of your bank
There are very few books out there written by bankers telling a new business how to use their banking relationship to their advantage...this one does just that and more. I would put this on the suggested reading list of all small businesses.

Society's Final Solution

Author: Laura E. Randa

Outstanding and balanced treatise on the death penalty
This is an outstanding and balanced work on the death penalty. All sides are represented and the first chapter is one of the best histories of the death penalty ever written. Those supporting the death penalty and those opposing the death penalty will find much in this work to devour. More than anything, this work shows that there are no easy answers and in fact, no easy questions. The authors are well known and include lawyers, teachers, Congressional people, lobbyists, etc. This is a work one should include in any discussion of the death penalty.

The most comprehensive study of the death penalty - a must!
This overview looks at all sides of this very important issue. Beginning with a background history, this collection of articles covers a perspective ranging from those of prosecutors, to death row inmates, to pardons boards, to family members of victims. This work has no particular axe to grind which I find extremely refreshing. This work is an excellent educational tool for exploring all facets of the death penalty. I highly recommed it in a classroom, resource center, or library.

Stable Paretian Models in Finance
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (13 June, 2000)
Authors: Svetlozar T. Rachev and Stefan Mittnik
Average review score:

A good source of information
The book is a good source of information on stable distributions (univariate and multivariate) and on their applications in different finance areas, including modeling of financial returns, portfolio analysis, option pricing, and risk management. The book might be helpful not only to finance researchers and practitioners but also to others who encounter heavy-tailed and/or skewed processes, for example, econometricians and actuaries.

Foreword, by Eduardo S. Schwartz,California Chair in Real Estate and Professor of Finance Anderson School of Management
The adoption of stable modeling in finance and econometrics is undoubtedly one of the most interesting and promising ideas which has arisen in these fields. It is now widely accepted that classical models for the description of the dynamics of financial and economic variables suffer from major structural weaknesses, as they fail to explain important features of the empirical data. Therefore, the search for new more powerful models is a fundamental and fascinating topic of research. In this book, Rachev and Mittnik, two of the most prominent experts in so-called Stable Finance, present a wealth of convincing arguments to support the claim that stable models offer the right approach to the subject. Their monograph, which collects a large part of the authors' work in stable financial modeling, brings together innovative insights as well as new elegant explanations of financial and economic phenomena. A book that gets at the heart of raising start up capital
Reviewed by Robert T. Koveleskie, founder VentureDirectory.com

I have been in the capital raising business for many years and I strongly recommend this book for anyone attempting to raise capital for the first time. I also recommend it for financial planners, bankers, attorneys and accountants in case a client is interested in raising capital for a venture. This book is very direct. It covers well the type of money available for start-up businesses and how to go about getting it. A few important things it points out is that you must have a sound business in place if you expect to get the professional money people interested and you must have a professional business plan that tells them all about your business. Raising capital is no different than any other business. It takes a good product, good management in place, and a lot of long hours contacting the right people and selling hard. Finally, after you raise the money, the real hard work begins, for you have expectations of your investors to make good.

Choosing a source of financing for uour new business
START UP FINANCING discusses the various sources of startup money for a new or growing business. It gives the pros and cons of each type of financing. It also discusses in some detail what each type of investor or lender is looking for in making a decision to become involved with your company Several very important issues that every entrepreneur must keep in mind are the following: 1. Your strategy for the business must be sound to have a hope of raising money from any source. You must have identified and described the unique features of your product or service and the existence of a market for this product or service. In the words of Mary Kay Ash, the founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics--"Money isn't everything you also have to know what you are doing." 2. You must remember that in raising financing for your business your marketing skills may be just as important as your entrepreneurial skills. Whether you like it or not you must be a pretty good sales person. And, you have only several t

A Saving Grace in Tough Times
I knew I wanted to work in venture capital but breaking into the market in these tought times was pretty intimidating. A friend of mine suggested these guides as a good resource and I'm glad I followed his advice. I now have a much better idea of the challenges facing the industry right now, and how to leverage my background to get where I want, despite the tough market. This guide also provided insight into which firms are staying afloat and which ones are struggling. I feel like I definitely have a cutting edge now.

Wheeling and dealing
I'm currently looking into interning at one of the VC firms in and around Silicon Valley and was happy to find a guide that could give me the skinny on what's going on with the industry in general (ok, it's tougher than ever!) and which firms really appear to be viable options for my personal and professional goals. The glossary of VC lingo was an amusing and informative read as were the Likes and Dislikes of various insiders. I was thinking this could be the industry for me, but now I really feel enthusiastic about trying it out. Thanks, WetFeet, for confirming my hunches and helping me figure out my immediate career path.

Writing Proposals (Part of the Allyn & Bacon Series in Technical Communication)
Published in Paperback by Longman (July, 2001)
Authors: Richard Johnson-Sheehan and Sam Dragga
Average review score:

Best Book Available
This book is one of the better ones available for business proposals. It IS the best book on the subject for people who work in businesses related to science and technology.

The author's approach is straightforward, without the usual sales mumbo jumbo in other books. I found his strategies for improving the odds of success very effective.

The book is a bit expensive, but after winning a couple multi-million dollar contracts that price seemed very small.

Absolutely Awesome. Very Usable and Comprehensive
Unlike most books about proposal writing, this book really gets down to the nuts and bolts. But it also provides persuasion strategies that really help land the client. The book would work with business or technical applications.

I've read many books on proposals, but this is the only one I would recommend. You won't need another book if you have this one.

Young Men With Unlimited Capital: The Story of Woodstock
Published in Paperback by Scrivenery Press (August, 1999)
Authors: Joel Rosenman, John Roberts, and Robert Pilpel
Average review score:

Read it twice
I am not a book reader, probably to my discredit. But not only did I read this one, I read it twice. It is a truly fascinating account of how Woodstock came to be. After reading it, one will be more amazed than ever that the event happened at all, once one sees all that these two guys overcame or endured to bring it about. It is a captivating and entertaining book.

Been There; Didn't Know That
I was at the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair. I was young.

This book is an amazing, and surprisingly humorous, inside look at the machinations I never saw. The sometimes bizarre efforts that made Woodstock possible.

Even if you don't agree with the Woodstock sentiment, you should buy this book as a reference to THE icon of 1960s America.
